HANGING BY A THREAD

INTERIOR DESIGN  -  THIRD YEAR 2019
EXHIBITION INSTALLATION

A temporary exhibition space that focuses on a design activism through the lens of globalisation was to be designed for Brisbane Powerhouse, New Farm. The exhibition required a strong 3-dimensional expressive response to the disposability of clothes and textiles within the 21st Century. The space needed to accommodate sitting, meeting and collaborating. As well it required a display of information, semi enclosed presentation space and lockable storage.

Masked in distortion and the dirty shadow of the fashion industry, Hanging by a Thread is an abstracted form of the current climate, that clothes and textiles are disposable.

The coat hanger form is used in repetition on a large scale to confront and scare patrons of the clothing mass production. This repetition is only visible when viewed up close, otherwise the hangers appear as one whole form. The macro to micro design language is conveyed again with one third of the hangers being yellow. This is a direct link to the one third of Australian's clothing ending up in landfill each year. Through the coat hangers hanging on aluminium rods, it creates a sound throughout the exhibition that reinforces an overwhelming feeling to the patron. As well, the curtain surrounding the exhibition creates a sensorial feeling in response to the shock and confrontation of the design activism. The layout of the exhibition replicates a change room layout.
