WORK, REST & PLAY
This project required an adaptive reuse of Kennards Storage Building located on the corner of Ann St and Longland St in Fortitude Valley. The requirements of the project was to create a multi-use facility that provided the opportunity for 'a place to stay', as well as users being able to undertake activities that could be considered 'work, rest and play'. It should seek to create a unique experience and create another layer to the exciting inner-urban precinct.
The analysis of site and initial planning and concept development was undertaken by Collective Studio (myself and 4 other students). We explored the idea of defining 'work, rest and play' and discovered a unique and sensorial approach to these activities. Creating a space for those living and working in and around the area as well as those travelling to Brisbane where they could experience an environment that evokes of reward, denial and reveal through a journey of spatial discovery.

Individually the design was furthered to create a highly sensorial experience through light and movements. 5ense is a multi-faceted building that aims to encompass a sensorial experience where the traditional approaches of 'work, rest and play' are abstracted and blurred. The building will embody an innovative adaptive reuse whilst simultaneously creating an experience that reflects journey and discovery. Focusing on the characteristics of light and movement, the environment intends to create a juxtaposition between holistic/mindfulness and interactive/playfulness (sensory deprivation vs. sensory overload). 5ense will depict immersive and exhibition design through the space to achieve 'work, rest and play'. The rich history and community will be weaved throughout the spaces of short term accommodation, exhibition, retail and hospitality.
